This expression comes from the past, when pretty much every manufacturer was printing paper catalogs where they used to collect all the available bicycle models for a specific year. So, in the current language you will still hear speaking about "Bike XYZ from the Catalog 2021", as well as "Bike XYZ Model Year 2021".

You can find a few Manufacturers that build frames using more than one material (e.g. Carbon + Aluminium).
